Better than expected yields was a bonus and a surprise in 2017 for most Ontario farmers as genetics, farm management and technology has come a long way in the last 5-10 years. Despite all of the adverse weather in 2017, Agricorp reported that Ontario farmers planted 1.5 million acres of corn and a final record yield of 186 bpa. Soybean producers planted over 2 million acres in 2017 and reported an average yield of 44 bushels per acre. With lower crops prices again in 2018, it looks as thought the theme to plant more soybean acres in 2017 continues in 2018 thanks to better prices and less input costs.
