Ontario Crop Highlights

Soil moisture during planting should not be a concern for most of Ontario in 2022 with the province receiving ample (and in some cases, too much) moisture. Despite bouts of cooler weather, warmer temps too have provided strong planting opportunities.

The tour’s 2017-21 projected 5-year average corn yield of 178.1 bushels per acre (bpa) compares with Agricorp’s average over the same period of 182.6 bpa and Stats Canada at 166.1. On the soybean side, the tour’s 2017-21 projected average yield is 48.9 bpa vs. Agricorp at 49.4 and Stats Canada’s 2017-21 average yield of 48.7 bpa. Historically Stats Canada seems to be too low and Agricorp a little too high.

According to the 2021 6th Annual Great Ontario Yield Tour, the provincial yield on corn was projected at 191.5 bpa vs. Agricorp’s 2021 estimate at 200 bpa (Stats Canada was very low at 175.2 bpa), and the soybean yield was projected at 51.7 bpa vs. Agricorp’s 53 bpa (Stats Canada was at 51.6 bpa).

Needed Rain Slows Planting Progress in Ontario. Good planting progress continued to be made in Ontario this past week as of May 18, despite timely rains slowing things down a little, according to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). The report estimated corn planting across the province was 70% - 80% complete depending on the region. Across Ontario soybeans were about 15% finished. Canola seeding experienced good gains in Northeastern Ontario, with some of the crop emerging. Winter canola is approximately 50% blooming.

Despite more rains this week, the soybean planting pace at 15% could be 75% complete by the end of this week ending May 29, 2022.
