2024 Great Ontario Yield Tour Results

The 9th Annual Great Ontario Yield Tour took place from August 12th – 23rd, 2024. This year’s tour was pleasant as scouts collected over 739 samples of corn and soybeans.

This year’s tour was more consistent with corn yields testing from 180 to 230 but the big “wow” yields from last year above 250+ bpa was missing. Niagara was the “garden” spot. Soybeans were consistently testing above average showing plenty of pods in all regions.

The number of corn plants per acre was slightly up by 318 ears vs. last year a new record high at 30,768, but average kernels per row was lower at 16.9 vs. last year at 17.1 and length was shorter at 33.9 vs. 23 at 34.7 down 2.3% largely due to tip backs caused by moisture stress.

The Ontario corn crop is clean with a touch of tar spot in SW Ontario and Western Bean Cutworm in Central/Eastern Ontario with both mature/dented corn out east to immature white in SW Ontario. The soybean had a touch of white mold but not to the same extend as last year.

Moisture was above average for most but not all but heat units were above the 30-year normal for all locations. The 2024 Ontario corn yield is 194.75 bpa the 3rd best I the last 5 years with a range of 192.80 – 196.69, while the 2024 Ontario soybean yield is a new record high at 54.12 bpa with a range of 53.03 – 55.2 bpa. It’s the best soybean crop Ontario farmers have ever produced.
